Flight of Fancy
August 7th, 2008Well, this week I’ll be out-of-town for the third straight weekend in a row. The last two weekends I’ve been able to post despite this, but it’s finally all catching up with me. I also have to pack more than usual this week, and get up super early for a flight. I got about halfway through a post this week but I’m just running out of time. Sorry folks, you’ll have to wait until next week.
In the meantime, feel free to check out this Google Tech Talk I came across. (I talked about Google Tech Talks in last week’s post.) It’s a class on Data Mining, taught by a Stanford professor at Google. Since he works there, he figured he’d just repeat the same lectures at Google (!) minus all the tests and such.
Anyway, it seems like a pretty cool class (if you’re into data mining, anyway) that goes over the basics of using R and various data mining concepts. For someone like me that could use some more exposure to this stuff, it seems like a Godsend. I already bought the book for the class and I plan to watch all the lectures and do the exercises when I can. Good times!

Dave,
I checked out some of the first lecture from the Statistical Aspects of Data Mining series on Google Tech Talks today. It looks really sweet and right up your alley. Maybe once we both watch all of the material we can talk about it.
Have fun in Texas.

Thanks for pointing out the TechTalks! I viewed the first three or four, and I’m a *lot* more intrigued by data mining than I thought I would be (though, I guess I should be at least minorly interested since it does have some relevance to my profession, eh? heh). Too bad I’m too much of a po’college kid to afford the textbook; the lectures shall have to suffice
It was good seeing you! I wish we could’ve visited some, but ah well, next time maybe
