Happy Holidays

December 27th, 2007

Merry (belated) Christmas and Happy Holidays from The Data Mine Shaft, everybody! As you might expect, things have been pretty crazy for me. Between doctor’s appointments, seeing relatives and friends from out of town, Christmas shopping, extra work, and a week long vacation starting tomorrow, I haven’t had any time to work on a post. Next week is probably out too (since I’ll be on vacation). Keep your eyes peeled for a post on the linguistics of fortune cookies in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, feel free to check out some Patriots/Giants related data, as the Patriots look to become the second team in NFL history to go unbeaten on Saturday. The current line looks like it’s 13 and a half points, less than the 23 or so it was last week against the hapless 1-14 Dolphins. (Ironically, the Bengals are only 3 point favorites vs. the Dolphins, which says a lot about their performance this season.) New England has set many records this season, and is looking to set a few more in this upcoming final game.

Best of all, the NFL has taken the unprecedented step of simulcasting the Patriots’ final game on CBS and NBC. In some markets, this means the game will be broadcast on 4 (!) different channels simultaneously (the two networks, the local channel, and the NFL Network). The last (and only other) time the NFL simulcast a game was for the first Super Bowl (!), showing it on two network channels.

I wonder if the NFL did this because a mere 40% of TV owners have the NFL network. Or maybe it was because the Senate Judiciary committee floated the idea last week of reviewing the NFL’s antitrust exemption. Perhaps it was because the influential Independent senator John Kerry is from New England. Or maybe the NFL did it out of the kindness of their hearts for the benefit of fans. Right.
