Happy Holidays, Part Two
January 4th, 2008As I mentioned last week, I’ve been on vacation. I just got back today, which means no post again this week. However, last week I talked briefly about some impressive statistics associated with the New England Patriots. This week allow me to follow up on that with this link. Apparently that Patriots drew the largest TV audience since the Oscars on Feb. 25 (and before that, probably the NFL playoffs). And if you notice, the NFL Network only got 4.5 million viewers, or around 1/6 to 1/7 of the total viewers.
The Patriots-Colts game this year (almost as big a game and maybe the best regular season game in NFL history) had merely 700,000 less viewers. To put it another way, despite being a bigger game and being on 2 extra channels, they could only add 700,000 more eyeballs. Maybe now the NFL has gotten the message that the NFL Network doesn’t add anything and people hate it? I’m not holding my breath. Nevertheless, supposedly it was the biggest audience for a regular season game since the ‘95 Chiefs-Cowboys game on Thanksgiving.
Ironically, I used to be a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan, so I kind of remember that game. I believe the Chiefs lost in a heartbreaker (I didn’t bother to fact check this) by 3. I think Marty Shottenheimer (spelling?) was the coach then, with the venerable Steve Deberg in his late thirties as the quarterback (I believe he was the oldest quarterback ever at that point). Nick Lowery, one of the NFL’s all-time greatest scorers, was their kicker. The joke was the Chiefs could never punch the ball in, so Nick got to kick field goals all the time. Didn’t hurt that he was incredibly accurate and consistent. Ah, memories…
